Position Summary

Reporting to the Executive Director, Global Media Relations and Financial Communications, the Director, Financial & Governance Communications, devises strategy and leads execution of internal and external communications related to corporate finance and governance that strengthen BMS’s reputation. Responsible for strategic vision, Director, Financial & Governance Communications informs and engages employees, financial, business and investment audiences and influencers, regarding BMS’s financial strength and growth strategy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develops and executes an integrated, multi-channel communications strategy to elevate the company’s financial profile and inform and engage critical stakeholders in the investor and broader business community about BMS’s mission, vision, values, industry leadership and market performance.

  • Work closely with Investor Relations and Corporate Communications colleagues to manage key communications aspects of the quarterly results cycle, including preparing and supporting the development of appropriate news releases for distribution across channels, developing executive-level briefing documents containing key messages and Q&As, and coordinating other plans and resources to drive alignment across Bristol Myers Squibb.

  • Partner with the Corporate Secretary’s office on delivering the Annual Shareholders’ Meeting and prepare senior executives with key messaging.

  • Maintain detailed and up-to-the moment knowledge and understanding of company’s finance and investment strategies, and awareness of the broader Corporate Communications team’s plans and objectives.

  • Identifies, develops, and supports unique storylines, content and thought-leadership opportunities relative to BMS’s financial and business achievements that advance the company’s growth and innovation narratives.

  • Builds and maintains relationships with key members of financial media and provide support for top-tier media engagements.

  • Develops communications strategies and materials for quarterly earnings, financial announcements and key investor events, including analyst conferences and investor days.

  • Develops communications strategies and materials for critical governance announcements and reporting, including BMS annual reports and annual shareholders’ meetings.

  • Develops and fosters collaborative relationships across corporate, commercial, R&D, and financial (including Investor Relations) teams to ensure strategic alignment and drive effective, cohesive and complementary communications in support of broader BMS company objectives.

  • Stays abreast of trends and best practices in capital markets and new developments in financial and governance communications across the life sciences industry.

  • Utilizes business intelligence and analytics to make data-driven decisions to inform communications strategies and boost stakeholder audience engagement.

  • Supports issues management preparedness, strategy, and response for financial issues, including providing input on response approach and company statements.

  • Manages the Associate Director, Financial & Governance Communications, agency partners, and corresponding budgets to support financial and governance communications efforts.

Key Qualifications

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in corporate and/or financial communications or investor relations at a large organization, global agency, or publicly traded company, or a combination of education and professional experience that would provide an equivalent career foundation.

  • Demonstrated financial acumen and experience in the life sciences or pharmaceutical industries.

  • Experience working with Investor Relations or other financial communications in a highly regulated environment.

  • Strong understanding of capital markets, financial reporting regulations and requirements, and corporate governance processes. Proficiency in investor relations matters, including disclosures, earnings and guidance, governance, investor identification, targeting and relationship-building.

  • Existing relationships with top-tier business and financial media and ability to effectively counsel and staff senior leaders for media interviews and other engagements.

  • Exceptional collaborative and team-building skills; Ability to interact effectively with colleagues and counterparts at all levels of the company, both within the Corporate Affairs team and across the larger matrix.

  • Superior written, verbal, editing, and interpersonal communications skills, including hands-on experience writing financially oriented news releases and educational materials.

  • Strong research and analytical skills; keen attention to detail.

  • Ability to learn the business quickly and excel in a fast-paced, challenging environment.

  • Self-directed with proven ability to meet tight deadlines and balance multiple initiatives with competing priorities.

  • Proficiency with digital communications and effective use of social media platforms.

  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in business, journalism, English or communications or related field.
