EssentialEmployees are expected to report to campus during a University State of Emergency (reduced operations or campus closure) unless specifically directed by the Department not to report or if directed by civil emergency or medical authorities not to report for health and safety reasons. As an EssentialEmployee, you must report to campus even if the closure is less than 3 days. Responsibilities 50% - Conduct blood and marrow transplant and anti-tumor experiments with mouse and human T cells in support of clinical applications. A range of activities will be expected: * Perform cell isolation, enrichment and injection under supervision. * Tissue harvesting, sectioning, and staining * Flow cytometric characterization and sorting * Biochemical analyses including DNA, RNA, and protein (immunoblot) evaluation Candidate will be expected to: * Undertake standard laboratory analyses independently using detailed protocols. * Perform complex experiments consisting of multiple timepoints and a variety of experimental variables. * Keep accurate records of experimental outlines and results.. 20% - Cell culture, team science, and reagent preparation duties which include: * Perform cell culturing of multiple cell lines. * Undertake cloning and preparation of bacterial and lentiviral vectors. * Assist other investigators in large scale harvests. * Maintain common stocks of media, buffers and commonly used reagents Candidate will be expected to: * Work and communicate with others in a team-centered approach. * Be flexible in their thinking and timing to multi-task many items on the same day. * Practice a thorough approach to scientific execution and maintain a high internal standard of quality control. * Maintain exquisite quality control of stock reagents 20% - Data review and overall lab management * Diligently document experiments in lab notebooks. * Prepare summary reports of experimental results in support of manuscript preparation. Prepare graphics for presentation. Present summarized data to supervisor * Lab maintenance (ordering supplies, checking inventory) and completing regulatory paperwork as required (OSHA, UCUCA, radiation safety). * Implement and then execute a system of organization for the lab (lab notebooks, freezer stocks, inventory, etc.) * Delegate shared lab duties to other members of team * Other projects as assigned by supervisor. Candidate will be evaluated based upon: * Ability to track lab usage of common reagents and provide replacements in a timely fashion. * Timeliness in completing regulatory paperwork and their open communication with regulatory bodies. * The systematic organization of the lab and delegation of tasks to all lab members 10% - Act as a resource for medical students, undergraduates, new technicians, and post-doctoral trainees * Serve as a front-line resource for day-to-day and protocol-related questions. * General onboarding of new lab members, getting them up to speed * Oversight of other technicians including the training of new technicians * General awareness of all projects in the lab to ensure the proper techniques are being utilized and methods are standardized. Candidate is expected to demonstrate: * Open communication with multiple members of the laboratory Qualifications Required Qualifications * BA/BS in a scientific or health related field and 2 years research experience, OR applicable advanced degree, OR a combination of education and experience in research to equal 6 years * Experience working within a basic or translational science research setting and documented ability to perform multi-step experiments in a research lab * Previous experience working with and handling mice in a research setting. Must be able to pick up, hold, and restrain mice; administer therapeutics (e.g. via intraperitoneal injection); and collect blood and tissue samples * Broad exposure to molecular biology and cellular engineering, with particular experience in cell culture, including the practice of aseptic technique * Experience reporting effectively on the progress and direction of individual projects using written and verbal English, to include proper grammar usage and accurate spelling * Demonstrated data management skills, including data collection, data entry and quality control * Computer proficiency and ability to navigate multiple software applications * Ability to work both independently and as part of a team * Flexible work hours, including occasional evenings and weekends Preferred Qualifications * Knowledge of immunology and murine models of disease. * Previous experience working with models of in vivo tumor responses, bone marrow transplantation, or graft-versus-host disease * Ability and desire to contribute to laboratory meetings and attend and participate in journal clubs * Experience with flow cytometry which includes staining, running of samples, and analysis of data * Familiarity in ordering lab supplies and keeping a laboratory well-provisioned * Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills About the Department Program/Unit Description Peds BMT Byersdorfer Lab This position is located in the Department of Pediatrics, Division of Blood and Marrow Transplantation, and will be working in a laboratory that employs cellular engineering to deliver therapies for transplant and cancer patients. The lab uses animal models and precise genetic engineering to modulate the therapeutic potential of various subsets of immune cells.
