The department of Psychiatry has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Supervisor, Research Laboratory to work on the UHealth campus. The Supervisor, Research Laboratory oversees clinical data and complex research protocols and coordinates clinic and research activities. Further, the incumbent takes initiative in the design, implementation, and coordination of research studies.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Keeps all laboratory equipment in good working order and makes minor repairs.

  • Oversees and collaborates in the development of study tools.

  • Evaluates the availability of resources for research studies and the impact of studies on resources.

  • Develops, implements, and maintains standard operating procedures.

  • Reviews numerous laboratory results and enters abnormal results into database.

  • Coordinates training and monitors performance of procedures.

  • Assists in the determination of fiscal requirements and in the preparation of budgetary recommendations.

  • Prepares reports setting forth progress, adverse trends, and appropriate recommendations.

  • Establishes and continuously assesses the effectiveness of the internal controls within the unit and compliance with university policies and procedures.

  • Ensures employees are trained in controls within the function and on university policy and procedures.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field

  • Minimum 3 years of relevant experience

  • Bilingual (English, Spanish) preferred.

  • HIV-related knowledge or experience in the field preferred

DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC FUNCTIONSThe Supervisor, Research Laboratory, plays an essential role in overseeing clinical data collection and complex research protocols while coordinating recruitment-based clinical and research activities for the MACS/WIHS Combined Cohort Study (MWCCS) and its sub-studies, reporting to Dr. Deborah Jones at the UM Miller School of Medicine in Miami. In addition to managing laboratory operations, this role involves taking the initiative in designing, implementing, and coordinating recruitment-based research activities, focusing on recruiting and retaining participants primarily from diverse HIV/AIDS communities (e.g., Black, Latinx, LGBTQ+) in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties. The Supervisor also initiates and cultivates collaborative partnerships with clinics, community organizations, and non-governmental entities to promote recruitment-based research activities and ensure achievement of MWCCS goals. With responsibilities encompassing staff supervision, protocol adherence, data management, community liaison, and recruitment coordination, the Supervisor in the research Laboratory is integral to achieving MWCCS goals of increasing scientific knowledge and enhancing community health outcomes.

  • Exhibits excellent communication skills, maintaining a friendly and professional demeanor in all interactions.

  • Demonstrates a commitment and comfort with working with individuals living with HIV within LGBTQ+ and HIV-affected communities.

  • Travels to clinic sites in Miami-Dade, Broward and Monroe counties as required to establish and sustain recruitment sites at the community clinic level

  • Travels to community events and sites in the three county area to recruit and network with community stakeholders

  • Establishes and sustains community and academic networking opportunities to enhance collaborative recruiting efforts.

  • Makes community and academic presentations on study goals and recruitment

  • Provides oversight of coverage of recruitment appointments, community recruitment and meetings related to study matters.

  • Oversees development, implementation, and maintenance of standard operating procedures for laboratory activities.

  • Oversees coordination of training sessions and monitors the performance of laboratory procedures.

  • Retrieves medical records from community sites promptly and reviews and screens for eligibility-based information for enrollment purposes; ensures confidentiality of all medical records.

  • Evaluates resource availability, e.g., space, parking, materials, on campus and off campus for recruitment activities for studies and assesses their impact on resources.

  • Stays current with mandatory training in safety protocols, health equity, responsible conduct of research, continuing education, and required CITI competencies.

  • Identifies, reports, and assists in troubleshooting and resolving protocol deviations and unforeseen events.

  • Oversees and collaborates in the development of study tools and measures.

  • Assists in determining fiscal requirements for activities and provides input on budgetary issues.

  • Prepares reports outlining progress, identifying adverse trends, and offering appropriate recommendations.

  • Establishes and continuously assesses the effectiveness of the internal controls within the unit and compliance with university policies and procedures.

  • Ensures employees are trained in controls within the function and University policy and procedures.

  • Fluent in English with proficiency in Spanish (preferred)

  • Works flexible hours including nights or weekends as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Attitudes:

  • Strong computer skills with command of Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

  • Highly organized, analytical, and detail-oriented with solid planning and writing skills, ability to work independently, and think through activities, projects, or initiatives under tight deadlines.

  • Ability to complete tasks accurately and with attention to detail.

  • Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work under pressure and meet deadlines.

  • Applicants must be 21 or older, have a cell phone, and regular access to a vehicle for recruitment off site

  • Available to work full-time

  • Willing to learn new computer programs and train accordingly.
