About the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites:

The Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites (ISMHS) is a statewide museum system with 12 locations, including a central museum based in Indianapolis. Role Overview:

The Engagement Specialist is part of the Engagement Department at the Indiana State Museum working as assigned within the galleries and public spaces of the museum to engage and interact with visitors, assist with the facilitation of daily programming, respond to visitor questions and concerns, safeguard objects, and monitor artifacts and exhibit components. Occasionally the engagement specialist may be asked to represent the museum at various outreach events or assist with programs. Incumbent may assist in managing and training of museum volunteers. This is a permanent part-time position with a maximum of 29 hours a week.

Salary Statement:

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $16.73/hr but may be commensurate with education or work experience.

A Day in the Life:

Museum operations

  • Prepare exhibit spaces daily for visitors, maintains a safe and inviting atmosphere and completes daily checklists and reports all maintenance and safety concerns

  • Communicate visitor issues and concerns to security and other staff as appropriate

  • Support Visitor Services in providing a welcoming and engaging environment for all museum visitors

  • Manage customer complaints, incidents, and accidents quickly and professionally

  • Respond to emergency situations to ensure safety of museum visitors

  • Clean and sanitize exhibit and public spaces daily

    Visitor Engagement

  • Enhance the visitor experience in scheduled special exhibitions with friendly interaction, assisting with visitor questions and concerns, and remaining visible and approachable

  • Maintain general knowledge of exhibit content and in-depth knowledge of exhibit interactives and daily engagement programs

  • Implement scheduled and spontaneous activities and programs within the exhibit for diverse audiences including children, families, and adults

  • Collect visitor feedback on experiences and programs

  • Work with and assist museum volunteers as needed

  • Other duties as assigned

What You'll Need for Success:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred in Museum Studies, Elementary Education, Arts Education, Science Education, Anthropology, Public History or related field

  • Background in education, theater, and/or customer service preferred

  • Must be able to work 3 or more days during the week

  • Experience working with children and families in an informal and/or formal environment

  • Experience with hands-on, interactive program development and facilitation

  • Must be comfortable working independently and demonstrate initiative

  • Strong presentation, communication and customer service skills and collaborative work ethic
