  • DESCRIPTION
  • This is a training position for the machine shop.  Repetitive work.  May do simple set-ups on routine operations, tolerance may be close.  Tooling, feeds, and speeds prescribed.  All major set-ups made and tried out by more experienced operators.  Usually simple operations such as turning, boring, and facing.  Work includes such jobs as flanges, water seal rings, simple gland and bearing rings.  Check work with micrometer and standard gages, grind own simple tools and replace dull tools.  Perform all other duties as assigned.

  • COMPLEXITY AND JUDGMENT
  • Routine and repetitive work with instruction and training on new set-ups until sufficient experience has been acquired to proceed without assistance.  Make minor machine adjustments in performance of work.

  • EDUCATION
  • Able to use decimals and fractions and read simple drawings.  Use micrometer and fixed gages.  Generally equivalent to some trade school or comparable shop training.

  • EXPERIENCE
  • One (1) to three (3) months.
  •  
  • INITIATIVE
  • Work under direct supervision following established sequences and methods from definite instructions or frequent guidance.

  • PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Works in standing position; operates single or multiple machines; at times requires frequent lifting and handling of medium castings.  Chain hoists available for lifting heavy work. Some heavy lifting, push/pulling on occasion. Some work must be performed in an awkward position.
  • Employees working in this position are required to frequently walk or hear. The employee is required to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop kneel, crouch or crawl.
  • The employee must be able to occasionally lift and/or move up to fifty (50) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

  • WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Some conditions are extremely noisy with exposure to dust, flying chips, heat and some fumes. Some exposure to outside weather conditions.
  • Working in the foundry environment subject to temperatures of heat and cold depending on the season. Required PPE includes, but is not limited to, steel toe shoes, hearing protection, eye protection, and necessary protective mask.
