What is it that we do at Colonial Pipeline Company?

Colonial Pipeline is the largest refined products pipeline in the United States, transporting more than 100 million gallons or 2.5 million barrels per day. Colonial transports various grades of gasoline, diesel fuel, home heating oil, jet fuel, and fuels for the U.S. military through a pipeline system. Colonial transports approximately 45 percent of all fuel consumed on the East Coast, providing refined products to more than 50 million Americans.

About the Principal Cloud Architect Position

As a Principal Cloud Architect, you will design and provide technical guidance for the implementation, support and maintenance of cloud-based technologies, services, and platforms as a member of Colonial’s growing first-class architecture practice. This position is a strategic role and requires collaboration with cross-functional teams to analyze business needs, develop architectural strategies, and ensure the scalability, availability, and reliability of our cloud infrastructure to achieve business outcome-driven results for the company. The Principal Cloud Architect is a critical member of the Architecture Team working collaboratively across Technology and Business Units to enable CPC business functions through technology.

  • Collaborate with stakeholders to understand business requirements and translate them into robust and scalable cloud-based solutions.

  • Design and architect cloud infrastructure that supports workload, data management, and security requirements, ensuring high availability, scalability, and performance.

  • Assess the Company’s current and desired cloud maturity. Iterate the company’s existing Cloud Strategy with the objective of advancing the Company’s cloud maturity, keeping it up to date and relevant to current and projected needs.

  • Develop and provide technical guidance for the implementation of cloud security strategies, including access controls, encryption, identity and access management, threat detection, and incident response.

  • Evaluate and recommend appropriate cloud technologies, platforms, and services based on their capabilities, pricing models, suitability for specific projects or to meet business needs, and industry best practices.

  • Collaborate with development teams to optimize application architectures for cloud deployment, considering data storage, compute resources, and network configurations.

  • Conduct regular security assessments and audits of cloud environments to identify vulnerabilities and provide recommendations for remediation plans to enhance our security posture.

  • Continuously monitor and optimize the performance of cloud-based systems, applications, and services. Recommendscalability measures to handle increased workloads and peak demand periods.

  • Develop strategies to optimize cloud costs and drive cost-efficiency across the organization's cloud infrastructure.

  • Stay up to date with the latest advancements in cloud technologies, data management, and security best practices, and provide guidance on their adoption.

  • Work with the Director of Architecture, the Enterprise Architect, and your peer architects on specific initiatives designed to advance the maturity of the company’s architecture practice.

What You Bring to the Table:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information management, engineering, business administration, or related field from an accredited college or university; will consider a combination of experience and/or education.

  • Ideally, 10+years of progressive advancement in appropriate technical and/or software engineering roles for cloud solutions, including the architecting of cloud solutions.

  • Including experience with implementation, deployment, and support experience for public cloud services and infrastructure.

  • Direct experience with Cloud ready or native architectures, in particular architecting solutions on public cloud platforms such as Azure (preferred), AWS, or GCP.

  • Strong knowledge and experience in application architecture, cloud deployment models (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS), DevSecOps, data management principles (including data modeling, database design, ETL processes and data warehousing), design patterns, and cloud patterns.

  • Familiarity with cloud-native technologies, such as containers, serverless computing, and microservices architecture.

  • Practical experience with cloud security, organization, and governance including identifying and mitigating risk in cloud environments.

  • Experience with digital transformation and change management.

  • An understanding of architectural tradeoffs and the ability to communicate and present architectural decisions to all partners.

  • Ability to translate and distill complex technical concepts into easy-to-understand solutions and constructs for a variety of executive, business, and partner audiences. Strong relationship-building skills, fostering an ability to influence without authority.

  • Understanding of financial concepts to support budgeting, cost benefit analysis, and business case development.

  • Curiosity, a love of continual learning, and a fearless approach to asking questions.

  • Masters incomputer science, information management, engineering, business administrationor related field from an accredited college or university.

  • Experience in Oil & Gas industry and/or in a regulated industry.

  • Ideally, 3+ years of experience in one or more relevant architecture roles, e.g., Business, Infrastructure, Application, Security or Data architecture.

  • Ideally, 10+ years of progressive advancement in appropriate technical and/or software engineering roles for cloud solutions, including the architecting of cloud solutions, implementation, deployment, and support experience for public cloud services and infrastructure.

  • Experience with serverless, container, and automation technologies in GCP and Azure.

  • One or more architecture or engineering Cloud certifications, such as: Microsoft Azure Fundamentals, Microsoft Azure Solutions Architecture Expert, Certificate of Cloud Security Knowledge (CCSK), CompTIA Cloud+, Certified Cloud Security Professional (CCSP).

  • Experience or familiarity with both Information (IT) and Operational (OT) technologies.

  • Understanding of the Perdue model, a framework for relationships between industrial control systems and business networks.
